Stigmergy: How Ants Write Messages in the World

2025-02-10 · AI Ant Civilization Team

Stigmergy is the idea that an ant can communicate with another ant by changing the world, not by talking. This post walks through how the simulation models it and what to watch for when you play.

In the simulation, every ant has only a few rules: follow the strongest nearby pheromone, drop a "to-home" trail when carrying food, and recruit more ants when a source is rich. None of these rules is complicated. None of them mentions a plan.

Place a new food source and watch what happens. Within 30 seconds, a path forms. Within a minute, that path is reinforced. Within two minutes, it is a highway. The colony did not learn this; the world did.

The reason it works is stigmergy. The trail is the message. The next ant does not need to ask "where is food?"; it only needs to follow the strongest scent. The trail is the difference between chaos and order.

Watch the highway break when the food source runs out. The trail decays in seconds. Ants stop coming. The colony moves on. This is adaptation, written into physics.
